ECO Armor Block

ECOncrete’s modular concrete armor units used for construction of coastal and marine defenses such as breakwaters and dykes, providing robust protection from hydrodynamic forces. ECOncrete’s ecological Armor units comply with the strictest requirements of coastal and marine construction while enhancing biodiversity and generating valuable marine habitat.

The units can be used for both full concrete armor or integrated into rubble mound rock armor.

The ECO Armor Block was eco-engineered to accommodate different add-on elements for enhancement of target species for example oysters, fish, or seagrasses.

Tide Pool Armor

ECOncrete’s Tide Pool Armor adds beautiful water retaining features to breakwaters, riprap, revetments and dykes. The modular concrete Tide Pool Armor creates well-defined local ecosystems that mimic natural rock pools, increasing biodiversity while providing robust protection from hydrodynamic forces.

The tide pools are designed to be easily installed, using standard construction methods, and have been integrated into existing waterfronts in the US, Europe and Asia.

The product received the Global Biomimicry Design award for outstanding ecological and structural performance.

ECO Mats

ECOncrete’s articulated concrete mattresses are designed to provide shoreline and bank stabilization, erosion control and protection to offshore pipelines and cables.

ECO Mat provides flexible hydraulically stable protection while supporting growth of rich flora and fauna and enhancing biodiversity.
ECO Mat has proven ecological benefits, alongside with hydrodynamic performance making it a win-win alternative to rock armor and standard concrete erosion protection systems.

ECO Mats are pre-assembled to fit project needs, saving installation time and costs by being easily lifted into place.

ECO Seawall

ECOncrete’s Seawalls are available as modular pre-cast and cast on-site, produced in accordance with marine construction standards.

With science-based designs and unique concrete composition, the ECO Seawalls have proven to enhance marine biodiversity, add valuable habitat and create an aesthetic alternative to standard “gray” seawalls.

The technology can be seamlessly integrated into urban and industrial waterfronts and load-bearing seawalls without compromising operational capacity.

Bio-Active Wall System

ECOncrete’s Bio-Active Wall System is a revolutionary concrete application designed to induce rapid plant coverage on buildings, retaining walls and urban spaces. It induces natural growth of wall plants, lichens and mosses. Its high complexity and porosity create moist niches that support flora, without the need for complex soil systems.

Green plant coverage significantly improves urban landscape, provides cleaner and healthier air and reduces the ecological footprint of urban development.

The bio-active wall elements are a great solution for areas such as sunken gardens and facades, and can integrate planting pockets.

ECO Piles & Jackets

ECOncrete’s ecological Piles & Jackets substitute standard concrete piles and encasements for aging concrete, steel, timber infrastructures. They provide the necessary constructive support and protection while creating new and productive marine habitats.

ECO Piles can be manufactured as pre-cast and cast on-site, in accordance with marine construction standards, using an innovative modular mold system. Jackets can be cast on-site above and below the waterline.

Past installations have successfully recruited endangered species such as the Eastern oyster and generated nursing grounds for commercial species like the Atlantic blue crab, even in heavily exploited waterfronts such as New York Harbor.

Admix

ECOncrete®’s bio-enhancing admix is integrated into concrete mixes for precast products, both dry cast and wet cast, as well as in situ casting projects.

ECOncrete®’s admix, added as ~10% of the cement content in the mix, strengthens the concrete’s compression forces, reduces chloride permeability and in most cases can reduce the amount of Portland cement within the mix, thus reducing the project/product CO2 footprint.

Admix supply is carefully tailored for each project according to the used batching process, and can be shipped in small bags, 1 Ton bags, and bulk.

Ecological Armoring Unit

Armoring units are modular building blocks of marine infrastructure, which provide coastal defense against hydrodynamic forces.

ECOncrete® ecological armoring units comply with the formal requirements for coastal and marine construction and additionally create marine habitats, encourage growth of marine flora and fauna, increase species richness, reduce the influence of invasive species and enhance biodiversity.

ECOncrete® Armoring Unit’s dimensions can be fitted to specific project requirements.

The specific concrete matrix used for the casting is defined according to the project’s distinct constructive and biological requirements.

The design of ECOncrete® units allows them to receive various add-on elements for targeted enhancement.

Designed tide pools

ECOncrete® ’s tide pools can be integrated into riprap, revetment and breakwater zones and are designed to be easily installed by standard landscaping techniques.
The tide pools are designed to create water retaining elements which are absent in most urban waterfronts. They create well-defined local ecosystems that mimic natural rock pools typical to rocky coasts, and increase local biodiversity and biological productivity.

ECOncrete® Tide Pools are designed to mimic natural inter-tidal areas. With the Tide Pool’s constructive abilities, it can be integrated within a breakwater system or biologically enhance a shoreline.

Marine mattresses

ECOncrete®’s articulated marine mattresses are designed to provide shoreline stabilization and erosion control as well as for anchoring and protecting exposed underwater pipelines. ECOncrete®’s unique chemical and physical properties enhance the ability of the mattress to encourage growth of marine flora and fauna, increase species richness, reduce the dominance of invasive species and elevate biodiversity.
The mattresses are comprised of interlocking concrete blocks connected with a polyester cable making for easy transport and installation as well as the potential for tailor fit sizes.

The Product was developed with Besser company, a world leader in drycast manufacturing machinery, under the prestigious BIRD program (The Israel – United States Binational Industrial Research and Development Foundation).

Dry cast production allows for rapid production cycles cost effectiveness and world-wide availability.

Enhanced sea walls

ECOncrete® produces a range of modular sea wall elements which functionally integrate into coastal and marine infrastructure.
The unique properties of ECOncrete® elements support the growth of targeted marine organisms through design alteration and chemical modification of the concrete mix. These alterations do not affect the structural and functional properties of the sea wall, while adding strength, reducing maintenance, and increasing life span of the sea wall as biogenic material accumulates providing bioprotection.

The Sea Walls’ surface textures can be modified according to the project’s design theme bringing the environmental considerations into account.

ECOncrete®’s Sea Walls design can be modified to accommodate various anchoring methods used in the industry.

Bio-active walls

Bio-active wall elements are designed to induce rapid plant wall coverage of inland buildings. Green plant coverage significantly improves urban landscape, provides cleaner and healthier air, and reduces the ecological footprint of urban development.
The physical and chemical properties of the wall elements strongly influence the capability to support and enhance growth. ECOncrete®’s bio-active wall induces natural growth of wall clinging plants, endolithic algae, lichens and mosses. Its high complexity and porosity create moist niches that support flora, without the need for complex soil systems.
ECOncrete®’s Bio-active wall elements are a great solution for areas like sunken gardens and facades, and can integrate planting pockets for increasing green coverage.

Pile encapsulation

ECOncrete®’s ecological pile encapsulation substitutes standard pile encasements, applied to protect steel piles or repair timber pier piles deteriorated by marine burrowers such as worms and mussels.
In addition to the necessary constructive support and protection, ECOncrete®’s ecological pile encapsulation creates a new and productive habitat for marine plants and animals such as fish, crabs, and oysters.
ECOncrete®’s ecological piles encapsulation has shown excellent biological capabilities, including the addition of nursing grounds for key species like the Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes Sapidus).
Independent structural inspection conducted by CH2MHILL engineers a year post deployment and after a heavily iced winter revealed “hard and sound concrete.”
