For this subsea interconnector project we developed tailored trench blocks – based on our mattress design and technology – to stabilize the high-voltage cable and imitate rocky reef habitats within a Natura 2000 marine protected area.
A high-voltage subsea cable was installed in a Natura 2000 marine protected area, requiring a solution to protect the cable, meet environmental mitigation requirements and fit operational and engineering constraints. (Image: Transmission cable laid in a trench on a rocky seabed)
We supplied custom trench protection units based on our marine mattress. The nature-inclusive design and material restored rocky reef–like habitat and subsequent monitoring showed colonization by native algae, sponges, crustaceans, mollusks, sea urchins, and fish.
