Coastal protection: Breakwater armor units
Status: Installation completed
Local officials used this uplift as a chance to implement sustainability initiatives. SUEZ Consulting Engineering chose ECOncrete to survey the ecology and provide solutions to promote marine biodiversity.
The Grande Jetée’s riprap from 1881 was damaged by winds and waves following an enhancement after World War II. The local government set out to expand the breakwater’s lifespan, protect the harbour’s infrastructure, and promote tourism to the area.
How We Built It
Our Tide Pool units were installed to attract algae and support a diverse marine ecosystem at the same time as the breakwater is structurally strengthened and its lifespan extended by 100 years. The target species is the cystoseire algae, an ecosystem engineer, and the local environment will be monitored for the next decade to determine the success of the project.
