The Goal
To develop a structural concrete Marine Mattress that not only ensures hydraulic stability for offshore cable protection but also enhances marine biodiversity, supporting long-term ecological succession.
The Challenge
Offshore infrastructure projects, including power and communication cables, require secure stabilization on the seabed to prevent displacement by strong waves and currents. Conventional concrete mattresses lack ecological value and can disrupt marine habitats. The challenge was to design a solution that meets the engineering demands of offshore environments while fostering marine life and biodiversity.
How we built it
Leveraging ECOncrete’s proprietary bio-enhancing admix and science-based nature-inclusive design, we developed Marine Mattresses for offshore applications such as cable protection and stabilization (interconnectors, offshore wind, communication links). The mattresses incorporate our proven design and technology, applying low-carbon concrete mixes with ECOncrete’s patented admixture, to promote biological recruitment of marine organisms. Rigorous testing and monitoring, including physical model campaigns (at the Environment Coast and Ocean Research Laboratory in Madrid), validated the hydraulic stability and ecological benefits of our solution.
By providing our technology, design and expertise to local suppliers and manufacturers, we further improve the project’s environmental footprint and support local manufacturing and installation, creating opportunities for the local supply-chain.
The Mattresses align with environmental permitting requirements as well as international concrete industry standards and seamlessly integrate into standard casting and installation procedures.
